Ceramic and Wildlife Artist
I have lived in the North East since childhood and spent a lot of my youth years rambling the North East moors and coastline. Living in the area, I am fortunate in that I can spend a lot of my time in this wonderful countryside.
My work varies in style and medium, and I adapt the medium to suit the subject - for example focussing on a strong design factor when working on handprinted tiles and ceramics, lino prints, and woodcuts. Currently, I am spending even more time in my ceramic studio in Saltburn, creating handmade bowls, plates, and vases.
My wildlife art attempts to depict the smaller wonders in the natural world that may be overlooked, rather than the large panoramic views of the area.
Observation of the natural world forms the basis of my ceramic design. For the decorative images, my original art designs are transferred to my handmade ceramics e.g. bowls, plates, and vases. These are all fired to completion in my Saltburn studio.
As well as exhibiting widely in the local area, my work has been regularly accepted for the National Exhibition of Wildlife Artists, (where I have won the Birds Birds Birds Gallery award) I have had work accepted for the Artist & Leisure Painter Patchings Exhibition, (winning the prestigious David & Charles Award) and also qualified as a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition. I was also commissioned to provide a work for Sir David Attenborough.

Photographer
Traditional photographer Charles Twist embarked on his photographic journey 15 years ago, starting with sheet film and primarily capturing full-colour landscapes. Over the years, he delved into the history and technology of his craft. Rediscovering and mastering the reversal processing of photographic paper became a pivotal moment for him, laying the foundation for Dr. Twist’s Photographarium - a collaborative project focused on creating sepia portraits at events using vintage methods and equipment.
Subsequently, Charles designed and constructed his own view camera. Presently, he continues to employ the reversal process with a century-old camera to compile his personal photo-diary. Simultaneously, he utilises his homemade camera, fitted with a digital back, to craft colour photographs of landscapes and architecture. Proficient in both analog and digital technologies, Charles Twist's cameras all share a common feature - a bellows at their core.
Design, Photography, Print Making
Sometimes I see an image that needs beating up. An idea or comment will sit in my mind knitting itself together with my past adventures until a new way of seeing the familiar has emerged. Something catches my attention, my imagination sparks and I have to run with it.
My tools are a hybrid of camera, computer, and hands-on distress – combined they lead to eye-catching pieces that uniquely comment on popular culture. I aim to amuse and confuse the senses.

Pastel Artist & Graphic Designer
I’m a Graphic Designer with over 20 years of experience (BA Hons Graphic Design 2:1), who stumbled across surfing whilst backpacking around the world, back in the early 2000s.
Graphic design, web design, and animation had opened up opportunities for me to work all over the world including places like Sydney, Australia, and Hollywood, USA… but it was discovering the surf lifestyle that knocked me off my career path and opened up a new pathway, full of adventure, fun times and stunning sunsets.
Now, living and working in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, I’m surrounded by other inspiring artists daily at the ‘Saltburn Studios & Gallery’ and it’s their passion and inspiration that have pushed me to explore different mediums, such as Soft Pastel painting.
Through my artwork I wanted to combine my love for the ocean and surfing, and mix it in with this beautiful little surf town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, aiming to depict Surfing at Saltburn in a fun, bright and uplifting way!

Patternation - Paper Art, Surface Design
Since graduating in 2010 with a degree in Textiles and Surface Design, I have been on a pattern-filled journey of discovery.
My journey started with textiles, but my passion for paper soon took over and Patternation was born. I produced and launched my first collection of wallpapers in 2014, which included my New Design Britain award-winning Gold Mosaic print. Wallpaper led onto homeware, which led onto cards, gifts and handcrafted decorations.
Despite the continuously changing product ranges, one thing has remained a constant and that’s my love of paper. Inspired by some of my favourite things, from nature and flowers to art, decorative ceramics, tiles and mosaics, I now focus mainly on creating beautiful paper cut artworks and getting lost in the therapeutic process of papercutting.
I continue to take steps throughout my practice to make everything I do sustainable, using recycled papers and environmentally friendly materials where possible.

Artist, Maker & Tutor
Excited by new perspectives and opportunities I am enjoying being able to devote most of my artistic energy to my own creative practice.
My life seems to have always been influenced by art and design.
A creative household inspired early passions for art and making. Studying printed and woven textiles at the Northern School of Art was followed by employment in the textile industry. Later I switched, via youth work, to teaching art and design at secondary level. The opportunity to work with a wide variety of media in the classroom now inspires my own work in both stained glass, ceramics, costume and textiles; or indeed any other media wherever inspiration strikes.
Teaching is still integral to my practice, always a pleasure to share my skills and knowledge via workshops and tutoring.

Fine Art
I try to use colour and movement of paint to express mood and emotion in my work.
I enjoy it when people make their own interpretations of what they see in my abstract paintings and let their imagination experience how colour and shape create a feeling personal to them.

Painter
Rae’s paintings are full of feelings for her surroundings. With semi-abstract oils, watercolour studies, and monochrome sketches, she captures eye-catching scenes through shape, pattern, line, texture, and most of all colour or its absence. With a sense of nostalgia as well as hope expressed through a contemporary feel, Rae seeks to share her joy of familiarity in everyday scenes.

Fine Artist and Installation Artist
I have been a professional artist for over 20 years although I have been involved with art all my life. I work alone and in collaboration to produce work for exhibitions, projects, and workshops. One of my most successful collaborations has been with another artist Kathryn Wren where we have produced many works together.
My work continues to grow and move into other areas, through various art mediums such as 3D, drawing, painting, and photography. Installation art is the vehicle I use to predominantly express myself often combining painting, fabric, objects, and sculpture. The history and geography of the exhibiting environment will influence ideas and be factored into an installation piece as final works always have relevance to their site and locality. Reoccurring themes in my work are; maps, geography/geology, history, and journeys.
I have always been involved in community projects, at major events, or within local community spaces. I try to encourage participants to have go, learn new skills to relax, and have fun. I teach drawing, painting, and 3D work to children and adults offering bespoke individual sessions or full classes.
I have also worked on various projects in the public sector and schools, training and working alongside teachers, producing resources, making books, gaining commissions, workshops, and exhibitions. I have exhibited throughout the North East and internationally in Spain. I have also exhibited collaboratively and in group shows.

Artist / Maker
My current practice focuses on the fragility of the natural environment. I work in a broad range of Art disciplines using many materials often found and repurposed.
Having taught in secondary schools for too many years, I then worked freelance on many art projects. In particular, I facilitated the creation of ceramic and mosaic murals allowing participants to make their own tiles and contribute towards the whole piece. I have worked in numerous schools, community, and public settings.
I still welcome commissions, but I am currently creating a new body of my own work moving in a different direction, developing new skills incorporating fibre arts and sculpture.
Presently I have a series of pieces at Preston Park Museum, Stockton, which explore the fragility of the moth population at our local dune and shoreline habitat, and I am also creating some work looking at the local crustacean die-off.

Fine art, ceramics & sculpture
Originally from Kilkenny in the Republic of Ireland, Andy Broderick arrived in the UK in 1997 to Fine Art at Teesside University and since graduating in 2000, has been working as an artist from his studio in Saltburn on the North Yorkshire coast, exhibiting widely throughout the country and internationally.
Andy’s art practice focuses very heavily on the discipline of drawing, and the use of natural materials and pigments such as earth, tea, and pulped plants, to develop a spiritual bond and physical affinity with the natural environment and the creatures that inhabit it. The qualities of individual lines and marks are very important in Andy’s work and so rather than existing purely for the purpose of formal representation, he tries to use lines that express energy and life, or a certain texture, form or weight, or even just for it’s own sake – a thing of beauty.
Andy draws from living objects within nature – plants, animals, and human figures, and is very interested in the feeling of animation and the sense of being alive that lines and marks can convey when portraying these subjects. This current body of work is influenced by the Arte Povera movement in Italy and by Japanese Zen painting, where Andy has been using animals as a point of focus on the natural world and surrounding environment.
The principal focus of these drawings is on simplicity, purity, and honesty, and to create a sense of slowing down and connecting with the subject, like a sort of meditation.
